A little while ago I wrote about the temptations of using Arch Linux instead of Gentoo. About 5 months after writing it I only have Arch Linux machines around me. I'm a satisfied Gentoo user for a couple of years now. The current installation is reaching an age of 3.5 years and, despite some disk fragmentation, things run all fine. I really like the flexible aspects of this distribution, allowing you to have overlays with custom patches and having use flags to keep cruft away from your system. Of course there's a price to pay, and everyone knows what it is: those damned compile times. But it's a price I'm willing to pay for having a system on which I have total control.
